Mixing Gins In A Martini. What?

Mixing Gins In A Martini. What?

I was in New York City recently on business and I took a client to the Blue Bar, the official bar of the Algonquin Hotel on 44th Street. Fantastic place (and very blue). Anyway, as I like to try new gins, I asked the bartender if he had any interesting ones for a martini.

He said in a thick Italian (I think it was Italian) accent, "Let me blend three for you and see if you like."

Blend gins? What is this, finger paint time?

But the bartender seemed quite confident about his idea and I was in an experimental mood anyway. He continued, "I will take Tanqueray, Bombay Saphire and Hendrick's gins and blend them into one beautiful martini for you."

And so he did and I gotta say...it was fantastic. I normally can't stand Bombay Saphire - it's too perfumey for my taste - and I don't mind Tanqueray as a mixer, but not in a martini. Hendrick's is okay as a martini, but not my first choice. But together, somehow these three were awesome.

The only thing that would have made it better is a Tini Grail. But I digress.

He explained that the Tanqueray is the base gin, the Bombay Saphire gives it some spirit and the Hendrick's balances out the Bombay Saphire so it doesn't overpower.

Hendrick's and Bombay Saphire and Tanqueray gins mixed together into one martini.

After enjoying a few sips I asked this alchemist-of-a-bartender what his favorite gin was and he quickly said, "Plymouth." That being my favorite too we high-fived over the bar and called it a night. A good night.

Who would have thought you could mix gins? This opens so many doors to our martini enjoying Friday nights. Post your own experimental concoctions below.

And keep on Grailin'!

I never tried this, but I do love the Algonquin! My wife and I have stayed there twice now on trips to NYC. Is the cat still a part of the charm?

Sticking to top shelf gins all the time (or vodkas) is not necessarily good for one's budget. Nor are top shelf gins (or vodkas) necessary for a great martini experience. I want to share with you my go-to budget martini. It involves Gordon's Gin, a little more vermouth, a shake and a twist.

Jennifer Lawrence, If You Do Throw A Martini In Trump's Face Remember It's All In The Glass

Actress Jennifer Lawrence told Oprah that she'd like to throw a martini in Donald Trump's face. While it would chill us to our bones to waste the sweet nectar that is a martini on anyone's face, and we are not taking political sides here, we do have some suggestions as to which martini glasses would serve Ms. Lawrence's purpose best.

Gin or vodka. The great martini debate. But to me it's the wrong debate. Because if we look at what I call the "Flavor Spectrum" for vodka and compare it to that of gin, we realize that it's dangerous to compare "vodka" to "gin," categorically. Dangerous in that one may kill his or her inner gin lover by mistake. Let me explain.
